Overview

The Tiger Endler is a striking form of Endler's Livebearer in which males carry bold vertical black bars over an orange and metallic green body, giving a tiger-stripe effect. The species comes from a few warm coastal lagoons in north-eastern Venezuela. Peaceful, hardy and always on the move, it is perfect for nano tanks, planted community aquariums and beginners.

  • Adult Size: Around 2.5–3 cm (1 in) for males; females up to 4 cm (1.5 in)
  • Lifespan: 2–3 years

Origin

  • Native to: Campoma and Buena Vista lagoons, north-eastern Venezuela
  • Habitat: Very warm, hard, algae-rich lagoon water

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, grazing on algae and small invertebrates
  • Preferred Foods: Crushed flake, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina, cyclops
  • Feeding Habits: Small pinches twice daily; vegetable matter keeps colours bright; they graze biofilm and algae between meals

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small rasboras, ember tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, dwarf shrimp and other calm community fish
  • Avoid: Guppies (they hybridise), fin-nippers, anything large enough to eat them

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful and busy
  • Territoriality: None; males display and chase constantly, females can bicker

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Very small, so easily bullied or eaten; needs warm, hard, clean water; stable, well-filtered water is essential

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, hard and alkaline
  • Temperature: 24–30°C (75–86°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.5
  • Hardness: 15–35 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a colony; nano tanks suit them well

Final Notes

Endlers breed readily, producing 5–25 fry every three to four weeks, and adults in a planted tank generally ignore them; keeping males only avoids a population boom. Do not mix with guppies, as they hybridise and the tiger pattern is quickly diluted. Wild populations are thought extinct, so pure aquarium lines are worth preserving. A tiny fish with outsized character and colour.
