Step through our doors and you’ll find over 220 aquariums bursting with colour — tropical, coldwater and marine fish living side by side, plus our dedicated pond bays for koi and goldfish enthusiasts. It’s not just a shop, it’s a proper aquatic experience, and one Swanley has trusted since 1978.
Nearly five decades on, that passion hasn’t faded one bit. One of our team has been with us for over 30 years — that’s three decades of hands-on experience poured into every piece of advice we give, every fish we select, and every tank we set up. When you ask us a question, you’re not getting a script, you’re getting real knowledge built up over a lifetime in the hobby.

Birchwood Aquatic Centre has been at the heart of the aquatic hobby in Swanley, Kent for nearly 50 years, since 1978. Built on a foundation of passion, care, and hands-on experience, our business has grown into a trusted name among hobbyists, families, and professionals alike. Our team combines decades of hands-on experience — including one member who’s been with us for over 25 years — with an ongoing passion for helping every customer, from first-time fishkeepers to seasoned pond and reef enthusiasts.
We take great pride in the quality of our livestock. Our fish – tropical, marine, coldwater and pond – are sourced from trusted specialist UK suppliers chosen for the quality and health of their livestock.
Where possible, our team personally selects fish from our suppliers, allowing us to choose stock based on appearance, behaviour, health and suitability for home aquariums and ponds. For other ranges, we work closely with trusted suppliers who select livestock to our standards. We regularly vary the species and varieties we bring into the store, so there is always something different to discover.
Our suppliers have robust health and quarantine procedures in place. When livestock arrives at Birchwood, it is carefully acclimatised before being introduced to our retail systems. We also have a dedicated quarantine area where any fish showing signs of illness, or species that may need closer monitoring, can be isolated and treated before being offered for sale.
Our online home-delivery range works a little differently. Online livestock is carefully selected and packed by aquatic specialists at our trusted UK livestock partner and sent directly to your door using a licensed live-animal courier.
Sending fish directly from the livestock facility means they avoid an unnecessary additional journey through our store before travelling to you, while also allowing us to offer a much wider range of fish online than we can physically stock at Birchwood.
Fish ordered online are protected by our Live Arrival Guarantee, with cover continuing for seven days after delivery.
To protect fish purchased in-store on their journey home, we supply them in oxygen-filled bags. This gives them comfort during transit, whether you’re just popping round the corner or making a longer journey home.
Our aquatic centre is split into key specialist areas:
Tropical Fish – From peaceful community fish like guppies, tetras, and corydoras, to more advanced species such as cichlids and plecos. Our team can guide you on compatibility, care, and setup.
Marine & Invertebrates – A dedicated marine section featuring corals, crustaceans and stunning marine fish. We house them in carefully maintained systems using Red Sea Max setups to replicate reef environments.
Coldwater – A wide range of fancy goldfish and coldwater species, perfect for indoor tanks or unheated aquariums.
Pond Fish & Equipment – In season, you’ll find koi, goldfish, sterlets, oxygenating plants, and pond accessories. We also stock liners, pumps, filters, paints, treatments, and all the essentials for garden ponds and water features.
Dry Goods & Equipment – We carry a huge range of aquariums, filters, lighting, test kits, medications, foods, décor, and more. Whether you’re after a beginner setup or specialist gear, we can help.

Called in to ask advice about setting up and establishing a tank and was greeted by friendly, helpful staff who are very knowledgeable and keen hobbyists themselves. Alfie has been particularly helpful to us, setting up our tank and advising on the right fish, plants, equipment etc to use. Great selection of fish in an immaculate environment. Would definitely recommend here to anyone who's not been before!
We are absolutely loving our Marine Nano Tank journey, and Birchwood Aquatic Centre are just so great at helping us along the way. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and they have everything we need for our Tank! From Live Sand to Eco rock, to livestock and food, it's all there. Also, the place itself is incredibly clean and tidy, and livestock tanks seem incredibly well maintained. Big fans of Birchwood!

Walked in and my first words were "wow". What an amazing place. The staff couldn't be more helpful, the fish all looked really healthy and their aquariums are crystal clear. The staff are fantastic, literally couldn't be more helpful and also it's clear their passion for the hobby, they genuinely care. I just wish I knew of this place sooner.
