Overview
The Spotted Albino Walking Catfish is a pale, marbled form of Clarias batrachus with pink-white skin scattered with dark blotches and long sensory barbels. It breathes atmospheric air and can wriggle across land between pools in its native South and Southeast Asia. A hardy, fast-growing predator, it suits keepers with large tanks and secure lids.
- Adult Size: Around 45 cm (18 in) in aquaria; larger in the wild
- Lifespan: 10–15 years
Origin
- Native to: India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia and across Southeast Asia
- Habitat: Swamps, ditches, rice paddies and stagnant floodwaters
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, strongly predatory
- Preferred Foods: Sinking pellets, prawns, earthworms, mussels, white fish, bloodworm
- Feeding Habits: Greedy; feed juveniles daily, adults every two to three days
Tank Mates
- Best with: Large, robust cichlids and big plecs of similar size
- Avoid: Anything small enough to swallow; corydoras, tetras, barbs
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Not aggressive but eats any fish it can fit in its mouth
- Territoriality: Low; tolerates its own kind if well fed
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Challenges: Rapid growth, escape artist, needs a large footprint and tight lid
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, very adaptable
- Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
- pH: 5.5–8.0
- Hardness: 2–25 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres; floor space matters more than depth
Final Notes
This is an escape artist: it will push through the smallest gap in a lid and survive for hours out of water, so seal every opening. It must also be able to reach the surface to gulp air. It grows fast and is not the peaceful community fish it is sometimes sold as. Given a large, dimly lit tank with caves and sand, it becomes a bold character that learns to feed from your hand.
