Overview

The Red Tiger Oscar is the classic Oscar form, a dark body streaked with bold orange-red marbling and an eye spot on the tail base. It is a big, intelligent South American cichlid that soon learns to recognise its keeper. It suits keepers with a large, well-filtered aquarium who want a characterful centrepiece fish.

  • Adult Size: Around 30–35 cm (12–14 in) in aquaria; males sometimes slightly larger
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years, sometimes up to 20

Origin

  • Native to: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
  • Habitat: Slow, silty shallows among tree roots and marginal plants

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, favouring high-protein foods
  • Preferred Foods: Cichlid pellets, earthworms, prawns, shrimp, insects, frozen krill
  • Feeding Habits: Feed once daily, varying foods; skip feeder fish and mammal meat

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Large robust cichlids, big characins, sturdy catfish such as plecs
  • Avoid: Anything small enough to eat; timid or fin-nipping species

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Boisterous, predatory, intelligent and owner-aware
  • Territoriality: Territorial, especially at feeding time and when pairing off

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Huge adult size, heavy waste load, strong filtration and weekly large water changes

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres; 150 cm long footprint for a single adult; larger for pairs

Final Notes

Oscars grow fast, often reaching 20 cm within a year, so buy the full-size tank from the start. They rearrange decor, uproot plants and can knock heaters, so secure equipment and use a tight lid. Sexing is unreliable outside spawning; pairs are substrate spawners that lay on flat rocks and guard their fry fiercely. Give them space and variety and you will have a responsive, long-lived pet fish.
