Overview
The Platinum Snow White Parrot is a compact, man-made parrot cichlid developed from convict cichlid stock (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) crossed with blood parrot lines. It has the rounded parrot body in a clean white to platinum finish, with a small mouth and lively, curious manner. Its parent species come from Central America; it suits keepers wanting parrot charm in a smaller tank.
- Adult Size: Around 12–15 cm (5–6 in)
- Lifespan: 8–10 years
Origin
- Native to: Captive-bred hybrid; parent species from Central America
- Habitat: Aquarium strain only; parents from rocky streams and lakes
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous
- Preferred Foods: Small cichlid pellets, granules, bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina flake
- Feeding Habits: Feed once or twice daily; small sinking foods suit the mouth
Tank Mates
- Best with: Other parrot cichlids, severums, medium Central American cichlids, robust catfish
- Avoid: Very small fish, shrimp, aggressive large cichlids, fin-nippers
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; convict blood makes it bolder than a blood parrot
- Territoriality: Territorial around a chosen cave, strongly so when spawning
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
- Challenges: Can be fertile; pairs may bully tank mates when breeding
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, moderately hard and neutral to alkaline
- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: 6–20 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 120 litres for a pair; larger for a mixed cichlid tank
Final Notes
Unlike the blood parrot, this convict-based hybrid is often fertile, and a pair will spawn on flat stones or in a cave and guard eggs fiercely, so provide caves and room for tank mates to retreat. Sexing is hard in young fish. Strong filtration and weekly water changes keep the white colour bright; poor water dulls it. A hardy, personable cichlid that quickly learns to greet its keeper.
