Overview

The Ornate Tetra, or White Fin Bentosi, is the standard form of Hyphessobrycon bentosi: a translucent pink-silver body, a black blotch in the tall dorsal fin and crisp white tips to the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins. Males spend their days fin-flaring at one another in harmless displays. It comes from the lower Amazon in Brazil and suits any calm planted community.

  • Adult Size: Around 4–4.5 cm (1.75 in); males slightly smaller than females
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

Origin

  • Native to: Lower Amazon basin near Óbidos, Pará, Brazil
  • Habitat: Slow tributaries and forest lakes; tannin-stained water, submerged wood

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Quality flake, micro pellets, bloodworm, daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; live or frozen food boosts colour

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Other small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, peaceful shrimp
  • Avoid: Large or boisterous fish, known fin nippers

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful; males spar harmlessly
  • Territoriality: None beyond brief dominance displays within the group

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Needs a group of eight or more and stable, mature water

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 22–27°C (72–81°F)
  • pH: 5.5–7.5
  • Hardness: 2–12 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 80 litres; 90 cm long for a group of eight or more

Final Notes

Buy a proper group; single fish or pairs become shy and colourless. Driftwood, leaf litter and subdued lighting deepen the pink and make the white fin tips stand out. It is an egg scatterer with no parental care, and will spawn in a mature planted tank. Males are slimmer with taller, more vividly marked dorsal fins. Often confused with the rosy tetra; both are excellent, easy community fish.
