Overview
The Green Neon Tetra is a smaller, slimmer relative of the neon in which the blue-green stripe runs the full length of the body and the red is reduced to a faint wash. In a dim blackwater tank it glows a startling turquoise. It comes from the upper Rio Negro and Orinoco and is best for soft water nano and biotope tanks.
- Adult Size: Around 2.5–3 cm (1 in); females slightly larger
- Lifespan: 3–5 years
Origin
- Native to: Upper Rio Negro, Brazil, and Orinoco system, Venezuela and Colombia
- Habitat: Blackwater tributaries; slow flow, leaf litter, sandy substrate, overhanging vegetation
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
- Preferred Foods: Crushed flake, micro granules, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm
- Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; foods must be tiny enough to swallow
Tank Mates
- Best with: Ember tetras, dwarf rasboras, pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus, Apistogramma, shrimp
- Avoid: Anything large or boisterous; hard water communities
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Peaceful and shy
- Territoriality: None
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Challenges: Mostly wild caught; needs soft, acidic, stable, warm water
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, very soft and acidic; blackwater ideal
- Temperature: 24–29°C (75–84°F)
- pH: 4.5–6.5
- Hardness: 1–8 dGH
- Flow: Slow
- Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a shoal of ten or more
Final Notes
Most stock is wild caught, so acclimatise slowly and never add to a new or hard water tank. It tolerates high temperatures far better than the common neon and thrives with leaf litter, botanicals and dim light. Keep ten or more; a big shoal is the whole point. Rarely bred at home; females rounder, males slimmer. Given blackwater conditions it is one of the most beautiful nano fish available.
