Overview

The Mosquito Rasbora is one of the smallest and reddest aquarium fish, a deep crimson nano shoaler with a dark lateral bar. It is endemic to blackwater peat swamps of south-western Borneo, Indonesia. It suits mature, softwater nano and planted tanks alongside shrimp and other tiny, peaceful fish.

  • Adult Size: Around 2 cm (0.8 in)
  • Lifespan: 4–8 years

Origin

  • Native to: South-western Borneo, Indonesia
  • Habitat: Dim, acidic blackwater streams and peat swamps

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
  • Preferred Foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, microworms, crushed flake, micro granules
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds twice daily; foods must be tiny

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Other Boraras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, dwarf shrimp, nerite snails
  • Avoid: Anything large enough to eat them; boisterous fish

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful and timid
  • Territoriality: None; males spar harmlessly

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Tiny size, needs stable mature water and micro foods

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and acidic
  • Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
  • pH: 4.0–7.0
  • Hardness: 1–10 dGH
  • Flow: Slow, sponge filter ideal
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a group of 8–10 or more

Final Notes

Colour only develops fully in a group of ten or more kept over dark substrate with leaf litter, gentle sponge filtration and dim, planted surroundings. Add to a mature tank and acclimatise slowly; sudden parameter swings are the main risk. Continuous egg-scatterers with no parental care; females are rounder and slightly larger. In the right blackwater setup they glow like embers.
