Overview

The Long Fin White Cloud Mountain Minnow is a veil-finned form of Tanichthys albonubes with a bronze body, bright lateral stripe and red-and-white edged fins. It is a lively, constantly shoaling fish that colours up best in cool water. Native to the Pearl River delta of southern China, it suits unheated indoor tanks and beginners.

  • Adult Size: Around 4 cm (1.6 in), excluding extended fins
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

Origin

  • Native to: Guangdong and Hainan, southern China; northern Vietnam
  • Habitat: Clear, shallow, densely planted mountain streams

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
  • Preferred Foods: Quality flake, micro pellets, daphnia, bloodworm, brine shrimp, cyclops
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; include live or frozen food

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Danios, small rasboras, hillstream loaches, corydoras, shrimp
  • Avoid: Goldfish, fin nippers, anything needing warm tropical water

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful
  • Territoriality: None; males spar harmlessly for females

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Loses colour and lifespan if kept too warm long term

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, cool temperate, neutral
  • Temperature: 14–22°C (57–72°F)
  • pH: 6.0–8.5
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate; long fins dislike strong current
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a group of ten or more

Final Notes

Keep in a group of ten or more so the fish feel secure and males fan their long fins at each other. This form does not need a heater in a normal room and can summer in a garden pond, though the trailing fins make it a poorer swimmer, so avoid nippy tank mates. Egg scatterers that spawn readily among moss. Females are rounder; males slimmer with longer fins. An elegant, easy fish.
