Overview
The Long Fin Bronze Cory is a selectively bred, flowing-finned form of Corydoras aeneus, the classic metallic bronze-green armoured catfish. The species is found widely across South America, with Trinidad as its type locality. Hardy, peaceful and always busy on the substrate, it suits beginners and established community tanks.
- Adult Size: Around 7 cm (2.8 in); females larger
- Lifespan: 5–10 years
Origin
- Native to: Trinidad and much of South America east of the Andes
- Habitat: Quiet, shallow river margins and streams over sand
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, bottom forager
- Preferred Foods: Sinking pellets, catfish granules, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae
- Feeding Habits: Feed once or twice daily with sinking food; do not rely on leftovers
Tank Mates
- Best with: Tetras, rasboras, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, other corys
- Avoid: Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs; large predatory fish
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Peaceful and gregarious
- Territoriality: None
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Challenges: Long fins invite nipping; barbels erode on rough gravel
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, adaptable, soft to moderately hard
- Temperature: 21–27°C (70–81°F)
- pH: 6.0–8.0
- Hardness: 2–15 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 80 litres for a group of six
Final Notes
Keep in a group of five or more on soft sand with shady planted areas. They breathe air intestinally, so leave a gap under the cover glass. Females are broader when seen from above; males are slimmer. A large, slightly cooler water change triggers spawning in the classic T-position, with adhesive eggs placed on glass and plants; move the parents out to raise fry. An easy, characterful choice.
