Overview

The Leopard Guppy is a selectively bred colour form of the classic Guppy, the males carrying a dark, spotted leopard pattern across a broad, flowing tail and often the body too. Wild fish come from Trinidad and northern South America, but aquarium strains are farm-raised worldwide. A lively, endlessly active livebearer, it suits beginners and peaceful community tanks alike.

  • Adult Size: Around 3–4 cm (1.5 in) for males; females larger at 5–6 cm (2–2.5 in)
  • Lifespan: 2–4 years

Origin

  • Native to: Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana and northern Brazil
  • Habitat: Warm, slow streams, ditches and ponds, often hard water

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, with a strong appetite
  • Preferred Foods: Quality flake, micro pellets, daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, spirulina flake
  • Feeding Habits: Small amounts twice daily; include vegetable matter for colour; live foods bring out the best colour and fin growth

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Platies, small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, dwarf shrimp and other calm community fish
  • Avoid: Fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, large or predatory fish, bettas

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful and sociable
  • Territoriality: None; males spar harmlessly and chase females constantly

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Sensitive to poor water quality and sudden parameter swings; farmed strains can be delicate; stable, well-filtered water is essential

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, hard and alkaline
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Hardness: 10–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a small group; larger is better

Final Notes

Male-only groups let you enjoy the colour without the constant fry that a mixed group produces; if you do add females, keep two or three per male and expect broods roughly monthly, which parents will eat unless fry have dense plant cover. Guppies are known jumpers, so use a tight-fitting lid. A hardy, cheerful fish that brings movement and colour to any community tank.
