Overview

The Leopard or Julii Cory (Corydoras julii) is a small armoured catfish covered in fine dark spots on a silvery body, with a black dorsal blotch and striped tail. It comes from coastal rivers of north-eastern Brazil. Peaceful and sociable, it is an ideal bottom-dweller for soft-water community tanks.

  • Adult Size: Around 5.5 cm (2.2 in); females larger
  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

Origin

  • Native to: Coastal rivers of north-eastern Brazil, south of the Amazon delta
  • Habitat: Slow, shaded streams and creeks over sand with leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, bottom forager
  • Preferred Foods: Sinking pellets, catfish granules, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae
  • Feeding Habits: Feed once or twice daily after lights dim; do not rely on leftovers

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, other corys
  • Avoid: Large, aggressive or fin-nipping species

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful and gregarious
  • Territoriality: None

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Barbels erode on coarse gravel or dirty substrate

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
  • pH: 5.5–7.5
  • Hardness: 2–12 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 80 litres for a group of six

Final Notes

Keep a group of at least five on a soft sand substrate so they can root about safely. They gulp air at the surface, so leave a gap beneath the cover. Egg scatterers: a large, cooler water change often triggers spawning, with adhesive eggs stuck to glass and plants. Note that many fish sold as julii are the similar Corydoras trilineatus; care is identical. A rewarding, long-lived little catfish.
