Overview
The Jade Green Shrimp is a selectively bred colour form of Neocaridina davidi, the same hardy species as the Cherry Shrimp, with a deep, translucent green body. Its wild ancestors come from streams in Taiwan and southern China. Busy, easy to breed and constantly grazing, it suits beginners and planted nano tanks alike.
- Adult Size: Around 2.5 cm (1 in); females larger than males
- Lifespan: 1–2 years
Origin
- Native to: Taiwan and southern China (captive-bred colour form)
- Habitat: Clear, slow, well-vegetated streams and ponds
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, mainly biofilm and algae grazer
- Preferred Foods: Biofilm, algae, shrimp pellets, blanched courgette, spinach, leaf litter
- Feeding Habits: Small pinch every other day; remove uneaten food within hours
Tank Mates
- Best with: Other Neocaridina, snails, Otocinclus, small rasboras, pygmy corys
- Avoid: Bettas, cichlids, puffers, loaches and any fish large enough to eat them
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Completely peaceful
- Territoriality: None
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Challenges: Sensitive to copper, ammonia and sudden parameter swings
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, moderately hard, neutral to alkaline
- Temperature: 18–25°C (64–77°F)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: 6–15 dGH
- Flow: Slow, sponge-filtered
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 litres; mature planted tank; larger colonies are more stable
Final Notes
Add only to a fully cycled, mature tank and drip-acclimatise slowly. Never dose copper-based medications or fertilisers. Females carry eggs under the tail for around 30 days and release fully formed miniature shrimp, so a colony builds quickly with moss and hiding places. Mixing with other Neocaridina colours will dilute the green over generations. A well-planted tank keeps them bright and busy.
