Overview
Horseman's Cory, Corydoras eques, is a rounded, bronze-type cory with a warm orange body, a dark greenish patch over the shoulder and an orange blaze behind the head. It comes from tributary creeks of the central Amazon in Brazil. It suits peaceful community tanks with soft water and keepers wanting a rarer, richly coloured cory.
- Adult Size: Around 5–6 cm (2.5 in); females rounder
- Lifespan: 5–8 years
Origin
- Native to: Central Amazon basin, Solimoes region, Brazil
- Habitat: Slow tributary creeks with leaf litter and sandy patches
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, prefers protein
- Preferred Foods: Sinking catfish pellets, bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, blanched vegetables, live worms
- Feeding Habits: Feed daily; small amounts that reach the bottom
Tank Mates
- Best with: Small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, other corys
- Avoid: Large, aggressive or fin-nipping fish
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Peaceful, must be kept in groups
- Territoriality: None
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
- Challenges: Colour fades in hard, alkaline water; dislikes sustained heat
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, soft and slightly acidic
- Temperature: 23–27°C (73–81°F)
- pH: 6.0–7.2
- Hardness: 4–10 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres for a group of six
Final Notes
Buy a group of six or more; isolated fish hide and stop feeding. Provide fine sand and leaf litter, and keep the pH below 7.5 to hold the orange colour. Breeding follows the classic cory T-position after a cooler, softer water change, with eggs hatching in three to four days. Be aware that a similar 'false eques' is sometimes sold; the true fish shows the green shoulder patch. A gentle and beautiful cory.
