Overview
The Spotted Butterfly Loach (Beaufortia kweichowensis) is a flattened, disc-shaped hillstream loach with a spotted olive body and broad, wing-like fins that clamp it to rocks. Despite the trade name it is a loach, not a pleco, from the fast headwaters of southern China. It suits keepers who can provide a cool, strongly flowing, well-oxygenated river-style tank.
- Adult Size: Around 7.5 cm (3 in)
- Lifespan: 5–8 years
Origin
- Native to: Xi Jiang system, Guizhou, Guangxi and Guangdong, southern China
- Habitat: Shallow, fast, oxygen-rich headwaters over rock and sand
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, mainly an algae and biofilm grazer
- Preferred Foods: Algae, biofilm, gel foods, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia
- Feeding Habits: Graze constantly; feed small amounts daily; needs a mature, algae-rich tank
Tank Mates
- Best with: Small danios, white clouds, rasboras, other hillstream loaches, small gobies
- Avoid: Goldfish, slow warm-water fish, large or boisterous species
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Territoriality: Males hold small feeding spots; squabbles are harmless
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Challenges: Needs strong flow, high oxygen and cool, mature water
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, clean and highly oxygenated
- Temperature: 16–24°C (61–75°F)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: 2–15 dGH
- Flow: Strong, river-style with powerheads
- Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres long, shallow tank for a small group
Final Notes
Only add to a biologically mature aquarium with plenty of algae-covered smooth stones and visible surface movement; extra powerheads and an air pump make a real difference. It will not thrive in a standard goldfish or warm tropical tank. It can climb glass, so keep a tight-fitting lid. Males are slimmer with a squarer snout; females are broad and heavy-framed. Keep a group of three or more and enjoy their gliding rock-hopping.
