Overview

The Green Tiger Barb, or moss barb, is a selectively bred colour form of the Tiger Barb in which the black bars spread into a metallic bottle-green body, set off by red fins and nose. The species originates from clear forest streams in Sumatra, Indonesia. Boisterous and endlessly active, it suits lively community tanks with robust tank mates.

  • Adult Size: Around 6–7 cm (2.5 in); males slightly smaller and slimmer
  • Lifespan: 5–7 years

Origin

  • Native to: Central and southern Sumatra, Indonesia; captive-bred form
  • Habitat: Clear forest streams over sand, pebbles and rock

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Quality flake, micro pellets, bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, blanched greens
  • Feeding Habits: Feed small amounts twice daily; greedy, so avoid overfeeding

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Other tiger barb strains, danios, rainbowfish, loaches, larger tetras
  • Avoid: Guppies, bettas, angelfish, gouramis, slow or long-finned fish

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Boisterous, prone to fin-nipping
  • Territoriality: Low; nipping and chasing drop in groups of eight or more

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner, with careful tank-mate choice
  • Challenges: Fin-nipping when kept in small groups

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard, neutral
  • Temperature: 20–26°C (68–79°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 1–20 dGH
  • Flow: Moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 80 litres for a group of eight to ten

Final Notes

Buy a big group: a shoal of eight or more keeps the pecking order inside the group and away from tank mates. Green tiger barbs mix freely with standard, albino and gold strains, as all are one species. Females are plumper with less red on the nose and fins; they are egg-scatterers that eat their own spawn. Give open swimming space with dense edge planting and the green sheen is stunning under good lighting.
