Overview

The Golden Honey Gourami is a bright yellow-gold ornamental strain of the Honey Gourami, a slow, gentle labyrinth fish with delicate feeler pelvic fins. The species comes from weedy ponds and flooded fields of the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins in India and Bangladesh. It suits beginners and quiet, planted nano or community tanks.

  • Adult Size: Around 5.5 cm (2.2 in); females slightly larger
  • Lifespan: 4–6 years, occasionally longer

Origin

  • Native to: Northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal
  • Habitat: Sluggish, heavily vegetated ponds, ditches and flooded fields

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, insectivorous in nature
  • Preferred Foods: Micro pellets, quality flake, daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, cyclops
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; include live or frozen regularly

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small rasboras, tetras, corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus, its own kind
  • Avoid: Fast, greedy or fin-nipping fish, large gouramis

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful and slow moving
  • Territoriality: Minimal; groups form mild hierarchies

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Easily outcompeted for food; shy and dull in bare tanks

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 22–27°C (72–81°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 2–15 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a small group

Final Notes

Honey gouramis do best in groups of four to six, where their hierarchies and displays become far more interesting than a lone fish. Give them a shady, well-planted tank with floating cover and gentle filtration, as they breathe air at the surface. Males build bubble nests under leaves and pairs spawn readily. The golden form needs exactly the same care as the wild fish and stays a rich sunny colour when settled.
