Overview

The Ember Tetra is a tiny, glowing orange-red nano fish that looks like a drift of sparks moving through a planted tank. It is peaceful, stays small and hovers calmly in the mid water, which makes it the classic choice for nano and shrimp tanks. It comes from the Araguaia system in central Brazil and suits gentle community setups.

  • Adult Size: Around 2 cm (0.8 in)
  • Lifespan: 2–4 years

Origin

  • Native to: Rio das Mortes, Araguaia drainage, central Brazil
  • Habitat: Backwaters, oxbow lakes and small tributaries; soft acidic water, leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
  • Preferred Foods: Crushed flake, micro granules, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, grindal worms
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; foods must be tiny enough to swallow

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Dwarf rasboras, pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus, cherry shrimp, small pencilfish
  • Avoid: Anything large, fast or boisterous that outcompetes it at feeding, including most gouramis

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful
  • Territoriality: None

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Easily outcompeted at feeding time; needs small foods and calm, similarly sized tank mates

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and acidic
  • Temperature: 22–27°C (72–81°F)
  • pH: 5.0–7.0
  • Hardness: 1–10 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a shoal of ten or more

Final Notes

Keep in a large group; ten or more embers colour up and behave far better than six. Dense planting, floating cover and dark substrate turn the orange up dramatically, and the fish washes out under bright light in a bare tank. Egg scatterer with no parental care; males are slimmer and more intensely coloured, females rounder. Shrimp safe and a perfect nano tank resident.
