Overview

The Cuban Cichlid, now placed in the genus Nandopsis, is a stocky Caribbean cichlid with a pearly cream to grey body peppered with dark speckles and bold blotches. Wild fish come from Cuban rivers, lakes and brackish coastal waters. It suits keepers who want a characterful, moderately aggressive Central American style cichlid for a species or robust cichlid tank.

  • Adult Size: Around 20 cm (8 in); females typically nearer 13 cm (5 in)
  • Lifespan: 10–12 years

Origin

  • Native to: Cuba; also recorded from Hispaniola and Barbados
  • Habitat: Fast rivers, lakes, weedy margins, brackish coastal waters

Feeding

  • Diet: Carnivorous, takes some dried foods
  • Preferred Foods: Cichlid pellets, whole shrimp, earthworms, mussel, bloodworm, krill
  • Feeding Habits: Feed once or twice daily; vary protein foods; avoid overfeeding fatty foods

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Similar-sized robust Central American cichlids, large catfish, dither fish
  • Avoid: Small, slow or passive fish; anything it can swallow

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Moderately aggressive for its size
  • Territoriality: Strongly territorial, especially pairs guarding a spawning site

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Managing aggression, providing space, and keeping nitrate low

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, hard and alkaline; tolerates brackish
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.5
  • Hardness: 10–25 dGH
  • Flow: Moderate, well oxygenated
  • Tank Size: Minimum 250 litres; 120 cm long for a pair; larger with tank mates

Final Notes

These fish grow quickly from juveniles and pairs need a tank at least 120 cm long with rockwork, caves and open sand for digging. Sexing is difficult until adult, when males are larger with longer fin tips. Aquarium spawning is uncommon but pairs become fiercely protective when it happens. Hard, alkaline water and strong filtration keep them in peak colour, and they reward patient keepers with plenty of personality.
