Overview
The Butterfly Albino Long Finned Red Tiger Oscar combines a pink-white albino base with bold red-orange tiger marbling and flowing, extended fins. Like all Oscars it is a big, intelligent cichlid that recognises its keeper and begs at the glass. Native to the Amazon basin, it suits intermediate keepers with a large, robustly filtered tank.
- Adult Size: Around 30–35 cm (12–14 in)
- Lifespan: 10–15 years, sometimes longer
Origin
- Native to: Amazon basin: Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela
- Habitat: Slow or still silty shallows among submerged roots and marginal vegetation
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous (prefers meaty foods)
- Preferred Foods: Large cichlid pellets, earthworms, prawns, krill, insects, peas
- Feeding Habits: Feed once daily, only what is eaten in two minutes; vary the diet; avoid mammal meat and feeder fish
Tank Mates
- Best with: Robust fish of similar size: silver dollars, large plecs, severums, bichirs
- Avoid: Anything small enough to swallow; very aggressive cichlids; long-fin nippers
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Moderately aggressive for its size; predatory towards small fish
- Territoriality: Territorial, strongest when breeding; pairs may harass other cichlids
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Challenges: Large adult size, heavy waste output, constant digging and rearranging of decor
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
- Temperature: 23–27°C (73–81°F)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: 5–20 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres for one adult; larger for a pair or community
Final Notes
Oscars grow fast and rearrange everything, uprooting plants and shifting rocks, so use robust decor and a powerful filter with weekly water changes. The long fins make this strain slower and less competitive, so avoid nippers and fast feeders. Sexing is near impossible outside spawning; pairs form from groups and lay up to 2000 eggs on flat stones. Few fish offer more personality for the space.
