Overview
The Buenos Aires Tetra is a large, silver tetra with a blue lateral sheen, red fins and a black diamond at the tail base. It is fast, bold and always on the move. Native to the Paraná and Uruguay basins of South America, it suits spacious, unplanted community tanks with robust fish.
- Adult Size: Around 7 cm (2.8 in)
- Lifespan: 4–6 years
Origin
- Native to: Paraná and Uruguay basins: Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil
- Habitat: Floodplain rivers, ponds and lagoons
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous, strongly plant eating
- Preferred Foods: Flake, granules, bloodworm, daphnia, blanched spinach, spirulina
- Feeding Habits: Feed twice daily; include vegetable matter to spare plants
Tank Mates
- Best with: Danios, larger barbs, rainbowfish, corydoras, robust tetras
- Avoid: Long-finned or slow fish such as guppies, bettas, angelfish; small shrimp
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive, boisterous
- Territoriality: Low; fin nipping in small groups
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Challenges: Eats soft plants; nips fins unless kept in numbers
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
- Temperature: 18–26°C (64–79°F)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: 2–15 dGH
- Flow: Moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 120 litres with 100 cm frontage for a shoal of ten
Final Notes
This tetra will strip most soft-leaved plants, so use Anubias, Java fern or artificial decor. Keep ten or more; small groups become nippy and stressed. It tolerates unheated rooms and is one of the hardiest tetras available. Egg scattering spawns are possible in a dim tank with a mesh base; females are plumper than males. A tough, active fish for a lively tank.
