Overview

The Blue Tiger Polar Parrot is a compact captive-bred hybrid of the convict cichlid and the parrot cichlid, with a pale blue-white body crossed by dark vertical tiger bars. It combines the parrot's rounded shape with the convict's hardiness and bold nature. It suits keepers wanting a smaller, active cichlid with real personality.

  • Adult Size: Around 10–15 cm (4–6 in); usually toward the lower end
  • Lifespan: 5–10 years

Origin

  • Native to: Captive-bred hybrid; convict parent from Central America
  • Habitat: No wild habitat; convict parent from rocky rivers and lakes

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Cichlid pellets, flake, bloodworm, brine shrimp, spirulina, peas
  • Feeding Habits: Feed twice daily in small amounts; accepts most foods readily, vary the diet

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Similar-sized robust fish: severums, larger barbs, rainbowfish, plecs
  • Avoid: Small or slow fish; other breeding cichlid pairs in tight quarters

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; calmer than a pure convict
  • Territoriality: Territorial, becoming pushy when pairing and breeding

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Aggression rises sharply when a pair spawns; provide plenty of cover

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, moderately hard and neutral to alkaline
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Hardness: 8–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 120 litres for a pair; 200 litres or more with tank mates

Final Notes

Polar parrots are hardy and quick to settle, but pairs spawn readily in caves and will defend eggs and fry against anything in the tank, so plan tank mates with that in mind. Fry can be raised but hybrid offspring should not be passed off as pure species. Provide a long footprint with rocks, caves and a sandy substrate and they reward you with constant activity and bold behaviour.
