Overview

The Blue Acara is a medium South American cichlid whose grey-green body glitters with electric blue spangles, set off by orange fin edges in mature males. It is one of the most peaceful cichlids of its size and among the easiest to breed. Originating in Trinidad and Venezuela, it suits keepers moving into cichlids for the first time.

  • Adult Size: Around 15 cm (6 in); males slightly larger
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years

Origin

  • Native to: Trinidad and Tobago and northern Venezuela
  • Habitat: Murky still pools through to clear flowing streams and rivers

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, leaning carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Cichlid pellets, bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped mussel, prawn, earthworms
  • Feeding Habits: Feed once or twice daily; vary meaty and dried foods

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Larger tetras, silver dollars, plecs, corydoras, similar-sized peaceful cichlids
  • Avoid: Small fish that can be swallowed; very aggressive Central Americans

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful for a cichlid of its size
  • Territoriality: Pairs defend a spawning site; otherwise mild

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Digs; eats small tank mates; pairs become protective when breeding

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Hardness: 5–25 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres for a pair; more for a community

Final Notes

Blue Acaras are open substrate spawners and among the easiest cichlids to breed: a pair will clean a flat stone, lay up to 200 eggs and guard the fry together, so be ready for offspring. Males develop longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins while females stay rounder. Expect some digging, so use a sand floor and firmly rooted or potted plants. A robust, colourful cichlid that rewards a well-kept tank.
