Overview

The Bamboo Shrimp, or Wood Shrimp, is a chunky reddish-brown to olive shrimp with a pale stripe down its back and four feathery fans instead of claws. It perches in the current with fans spread, filtering food from the water. Native to fast streams across Southeast Asia, it suits a mature, peaceful community with good flow.

  • Adult Size: Around 7–10 cm (3–4 in); males larger with thicker front legs
  • Lifespan: 1–2 years typically, sometimes longer

Origin

  • Native to: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka
  • Habitat: Fast-flowing rocky streams and rivers

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous filter feeder
  • Preferred Foods: Powdered shrimp food, crushed flake, spirulina powder, baby brine shrimp, phytoplankton, detritus
  • Feeding Habits: Dose fine food into the filter outflow daily; a mature tank is essential

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, dwarf shrimp, snails
  • Avoid: Cichlids, puffers, loaches, crayfish, anything that eats shrimp

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Completely peaceful
  • Territoriality: None; will share a good perch

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Starves in over-clean tanks; needs flow and fine food; sensitive to copper

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: 4–15 dGH
  • Flow: Moderate to strong
  • Tank Size: Minimum 80 litres long tanks give better current

Final Notes

A Bamboo Shrimp picking at the substrate is a hungry shrimp, so target-feed powdered food into the current rather than leaving it to filter a spotless tank. Give it wood or rock in the filter outflow to perch on, and cover for moulting every couple of months. It cannot be bred at home because the larvae need salt water. Avoid copper medications. Well fed, it is a hardy and hypnotic centrepiece invertebrate.
