Overview

Endler's livebearer is a tiny, jewel-like fish, with males flashing metallic green, orange and black in ever-changing patterns. Native to warm coastal lagoons in northeastern Venezuela, it is hardy, lively and constantly on the move. An assorted group gives a mix of colour strains and suits nano tanks, planted setups and gentle communities for beginners upwards.

  • Sold as: Pack of 6 (minimum order quantity)
  • Adult Size: Males around 2.5 cm (1 in); females up to 4 cm (1.6 in)
  • Lifespan: 2–3 years

Origin

  • Native to: Northeastern Venezuela, Laguna de Patos near Cumana
  • Habitat: Warm, hard, weedy lagoons; formerly brackish, now freshwater

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, grazes zoobenthos and detritus in the wild
  • Preferred Foods: Crushed flake, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina flake, algae
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds two or three times daily; include vegetable matter; graze biofilm between meals

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Dwarf shrimp, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, otocinclus, ember tetras
  • Avoid: Guppies (they crossbreed), fin nippers, anything large enough to eat them

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful and very active
  • Territoriality: Males spar harmlessly; females can be pushy with each other

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Too small for general communities; needs hard, warm, stable water

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, hard and alkaline
  • Temperature: 24–30°C (75–86°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.5
  • Hardness: 15–35 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a small group; dense planting encouraged

Final Notes

These are males only, so no fry will appear unless females are added; if you do breed them, expect a new brood roughly every three to four weeks, with fry showing adult colour within five weeks. Keep them apart from common guppies to avoid hybrids. They prefer warm water and thrive with plenty of plants and soft-leaved cover such as moss. A colourful, low-cost way to bring movement to a small tank.
