Overview

Hongslo's Dwarf Cichlid, the Redline Apisto, is a slender species in which males show a yellow-gold body and a bold red band running along the lower flank and into the fins. Females are smaller and yellow with black markings. From the Orinoco drainage of Colombia and Venezuela, it suits keepers of soft, warm planted or blackwater tanks.

  • Adult Size: Around 6 cm (2.4 in) for males; females smaller
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

Origin

  • Native to: Río Vichada, Meta and middle Orinoco basins, Colombia and Venezuela
  • Habitat: Small tributaries and still, shaded waters with leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Carnivorous micro-predator
  • Preferred Foods: Micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, live blackworm
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; frozen or live foods bring out colour and condition breeders

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, otocinclus, corydoras
  • Avoid: Other Apistogramma, boisterous fish, fin-nippers, dwarf shrimp

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful towards other species; males spar with each other over territory
  • Territoriality: Pairs claim a cave and defend the surrounding area strongly when spawning

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Wants soft, clean, stable water; females turn fierce when breeding

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and acidic
  • Temperature: 23–29°C (73–84°F)
  • pH: 5.5–7.0
  • Hardness: 1–15 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 45 litres for a pair; larger for a harem

Final Notes

Tank-bred fish adapt to community tanks, but they colour up best in soft, warm water over dark sand with leaf litter and dim light. Keep one male with one or more females and offer several caves. Females spawn in a cave and guard the fry, becoming aggressive to the male in small tanks, so give him room. The red line intensifies with age and good feeding.
