Overview

Agassiz's Dwarf Cichlid is one of the best-known Apistogramma, with males showing a long spade-shaped tail, a dark lateral stripe and fins washed in blue, red or yellow depending on strain. Females are smaller and yellow when breeding. From the Amazon basin, it suits keepers of planted or blackwater tanks wanting cichlid character in a small package.

  • Adult Size: Around 7.5 cm (3 in) for males; females around 5 cm (2 in)
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

Origin

  • Native to: Amazon and Solimões basins, Peru to eastern Brazil
  • Habitat: Slow tributaries and backwaters with thick leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Carnivorous micro-predator
  • Preferred Foods: Micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, live blackworm
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds once or twice daily; frozen or live foods bring out colour and condition breeders

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, otocinclus, corydoras
  • Avoid: Other Apistogramma, boisterous fish, fin-nippers, dwarf shrimp

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful towards other species; males spar with each other over territory
  • Territoriality: Pairs claim a cave and defend the surrounding area strongly when spawning

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Wants soft, clean, stable water; females turn fierce when breeding

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and acidic
  • Temperature: 22–29°C (72–84°F)
  • pH: 5.0–7.0 (tank-bred); wild fish lower
  • Hardness: 0–10 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a pair; larger for a harem

Final Notes

Choose tank-bred fish for a community; wild imports need very soft, acidic water. Keep one male with one or more females and provide caves, sand and leaf litter. Females spawn in a cave and guard the fry alone, becoming aggressive to the male in small tanks, so give him space to retreat. Colour and pattern vary by strain and locality, and dim light shows them best.
