Overview

The Albino Rio Japura Angelfish is an uncommon albino form of the freshwater angelfish, with a pearlescent white body, pale pink fins and red eyes, and an unusually tall body shape that becomes more pronounced as it matures. It swims with the poise typical of the species. The wild form comes from the Rio Japura and other Amazon tributaries, and this strain suits calm, heavily planted community tanks.

  • Adult Size: Around 15 cm (6 in) long and up to 20 cm tall with fins
  • Lifespan: 8–10 years

Origin

  • Native to: Captive-bred strain; wild stock from Rio Japura, Amazon basin, Brazil
  • Habitat: Slow, vegetated river margins and flooded forest

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, leaning carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Cichlid flakes, micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, spirulina
  • Feeding Habits: Feed twice daily; small amounts, varied foods

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Medium tetras, Corydoras, gouramis, rainbowfish, larger snails
  • Avoid: Neon-sized fish, fin-nippers, boisterous cichlids, dwarf shrimp

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful; semi-aggressive within its own kind
  • Territoriality: Moderate; peaks at spawning time

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Tall tank, stable warm water, albino eyes dislike bright light

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.4
  • Hardness: 0–15 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres; at least 50 cm tall for a pair or small group

Final Notes

The tall body only shows as the fish matures, so plan for a much larger adult than the juvenile suggests. Provide a tall, well planted tank with driftwood, gentle flow and subdued lighting; this form prefers plant cover to caves. A group of six lets pairs form naturally, and pairs spawn readily on broad leaves or slate, guarding the eggs. Sexing is only reliable at spawning. An elegant and distinctive centrepiece.
