Overview

The Albino Red Tiger Oscar is a pale, pink-eyed form of the Oscar with vivid orange-red marbling over a creamy white body. A big, intelligent South American cichlid, it recognises its keeper, begs for food and rearranges its tank with real personality. Suited to experienced keepers with a large aquarium and a long-term commitment.

  • Adult Size: Around 30–35 cm (12–14 in)
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years, sometimes longer

Origin

  • Native to: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
  • Habitat: Slow, silty shallows among tree roots and marginal vegetation

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, favouring meaty foods
  • Preferred Foods: Large cichlid pellets, prawn, mussel, earthworms, insects, frozen krill
  • Feeding Habits: Feed once daily; skip a day weekly; avoid feeder fish and mammal meat

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Large robust cichlids, big plecos, silver dollars, bichirs, large catfish, all with room to escape a sulking Oscar
  • Avoid: Anything small enough to swallow, slow or delicate fish

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Moderately aggressive; predatory
  • Territoriality: Territorial, especially when breeding; pairs may bully other fish while guarding eggs

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Large tank, heavy waste output, digs and uproots plants; grows from juvenile to adult within a year or so

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to medium, slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Flow: Moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres for one adult; 1000 litres for a pair

Final Notes

Oscars grow fast and produce a lot of waste, so over-filter heavily and change 30 to 50 percent of the water weekly. They dig constantly and uproot plants, so use robust decor and a sand or fine gravel bed with secured rocks. Substrate spawners forming lasting pairs; sexes are near impossible to tell apart outside spawning. Albino fish appreciate slightly subdued lighting. A hugely rewarding, characterful pet fish for a large tank.
