Overview
The Albino Kribensis is a pale pink-white form of the popular West African dwarf cichlid, with red eyes and a blushing rose-red belly that intensifies on females at spawning time. It keeps all the character of the standard Krib: intelligent, bottom-dwelling and a devoted parent. Native to Nigeria and Cameroon, it suits beginners wanting an easy first cichlid for a planted community tank.
- Adult Size: Around 10 cm (4 in) males; females 7–8 cm
- Lifespan: 5–8 years
Origin
- Native to: Southern Nigeria and Cameroon
- Habitat: Slow, shallow, heavily vegetated streams and river margins
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous
- Preferred Foods: Sinking cichlid pellets, flake, bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, blanched vegetables
- Feeding Habits: Once or twice daily; sinking food so bottom dwellers get their share
Tank Mates
- Best with: Tetras, rasboras, Congo tetras, Corydoras, peaceful gouramis
- Avoid: Other bottom-dwelling cichlids in small tanks; fin-nippers; large predators
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Gentle and peaceful in a community
- Territoriality: Pairs defend a cave strongly when breeding
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Challenges: Breeding pairs bully bottom dwellers; needs caves and hiding places
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic
- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Hardness: 2–12 dGH
- Flow: Slow to moderate
- Tank Size: Minimum 70 litres for a pair; 100 litres or more in a community
Final Notes
Kribs are cave spawners that form monogamous pairs and breed readily at home, with both parents herding the fry; this is when they turn territorial, so provide a coconut shell or flowerpot cave and room for tank mates to retreat. Males grow larger with pointed dorsal and anal fins; females are rounder with a redder belly. Slightly acidic water gives a more even mix of sexes among fry. A rewarding cichlid to start with.
