Overview

The Albino African Clawed Frog is the pale pink-white form of a fully aquatic amphibian from sub-Saharan Africa, with red eyes, a flattened body and small clawed hind feet. It is hardy, long-lived and a greedy hunter that grows well beyond its juvenile size. It suits keepers who can offer a species tank.

  • Adult Size: Around 10–13 cm (4–5 in); females larger
  • Lifespan: 15–20 years

Origin

  • Native to: Sub-Saharan Africa, from Nigeria to South Africa
  • Habitat: Still ponds, lakes and slow rivers

Feeding

  • Diet: Carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Bloodworm, earthworms, prawns, sinking carnivore pellets, frog sticks, daphnia
  • Feeding Habits: Feed every other day as adults; daily when young

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Its own kind of similar size in a species tank
  • Avoid: Any fish or shrimp; smaller frogs will be eaten

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful with its own kind but a greedy predator
  • Territoriality: None, though larger frogs may eat smaller ones

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Escapes; grows large; unsuitable for community tanks

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, moderately hard and neutral
  • Temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F)
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for one or two adults; shallow water preferred

Final Notes

This is the albino form of the full-sized African Clawed Frog, not the tiny dwarf frog, and a small juvenile becomes a heavy-bodied predator that swallows fish and dwarf frogs whole. It must surface to breathe, so keep water depth modest, and fit a tight lid as it climbs out readily. Albinos are slightly more light-sensitive, so provide shade. Males are smaller with dark forearm pads. Undemanding, tolerant of cool rooms and a delightfully greedy pet.
