Overview

The African Dwarf Frog is a tiny, fully aquatic amphibian with a mottled brown body, webbed feet on all four limbs and a pointed snout. Native to the forested streams of the Congo Basin, it potters over the substrate and darts to the surface for air. It suits calm, gently filtered community tanks.

  • Adult Size: Around 3–4 cm (1.5 in); females larger
  • Lifespan: 5 years, sometimes considerably longer

Origin

  • Native to: Congo Basin, Cameroon, Gabon and Nigeria
  • Habitat: Shallow forest creeks, ponds and seasonally flooded areas

Feeding

  • Diet: Carnivorous
  • Preferred Foods: Bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, sinking frog pellets, chopped krill
  • Feeding Habits: Feed daily; target-feed with tongs or a pipette

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small peaceful fish: tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, snails, shrimp
  • Avoid: Large or greedy fish; African Clawed Frogs; strong current

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Entirely peaceful; best in small groups
  • Territoriality: None

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
  • Challenges: Poor eyesight; easily outcompeted for food

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft to moderately hard
  • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.8
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a small group; shallow water is ideal

Final Notes

These frogs breathe air and cannot survive out of water, so keep water depth modest and fit a secure lid as they can climb out. Their eyesight is poor and they hunt by smell and touch, so make sure food lands in front of them before fish clear it. Gentle filtration and plenty of plants and hides keep them relaxed. Males are slimmer with a small gland behind each front leg and hum at night. Charming and endlessly watchable.
